The OIES-Aramco Fellowship

This fellowship is for researchers who are in the early stages of their research career and have the potential to progress further in their field. The fellowship provides the opportunity to build an independent research career. It covers all areas of energy research, with a focus on oil and gas, including international relations between producers and consumers of energy; the economic development of producing nations and the geo-political aspects of all these issues alongside the economics and politics of the environment in relation to energy.

The Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES) invites applications for a funded short-term visiting fellowship of up to six months. The eligible applicants are masters/doctoral students as well as postdoctoral researchers who have obtained their PhD in the last five years. The Fellowship, which is kindly funded by Aramco, aims to promote research in the area of energy transition.

Applicants need to have a defined research proposal in one of the areas specified below or topics closely related to them.

  • Policies and regulation to achieve efficient and equitable energy transition
  • Re-designing energy markets to align them with requirement of low emissions
  • The evolving technology landscape and its implications for the energy market
  • Transition risk and uncertainties and implications for market prices and investment
  • Emerging business models and its implications for the energy sector
  • The role of consumers preference in achieving decarbonisation targets
  • Geopolitics of energy transition

The research proposal needs to specify the motivation, research question, methodology to answer the research question and expected outcome of the work.  The scheme is competitive and selection criteria depends on the topic, quality of proposal and research capabilities of the candidate.

Successful applicants will have the title of OIES-Aramco fellow and work under the supervision of an OIES senior research fellow. The visiting researcher is expected to spend some time at OIES offices at the start of the fellowship although physical presence is not necessary for the entire duration of the visit. The research output of the visiting fellow will be considered for publication by OIES subject to peer review.
