Oxford Energy Podcast – Measuring, Reporting and Verification of Methane Emissions from Natural Gas and LNG Trade

In this OIES podcast James Henderson talks to Professor Jonathan Stern about his latest paper, entitled “Measuring, Reporting and Verification of Methane Emissions from Natural Gas and LNG Trade.” Following the signing of the Global Methane Pledge at COP26 and the publication of the EU Methane Strategy the topic of methane emissions has become a priority for the energy sector, and Stern discusses the need for companies to be transparent and rigorous in their analysis of the problem. He also considers the examples of the six major pipeline gas and LNG suppliers to Europe in the context of the EU’s proposal to introduce a carbon border adjustment mechanism. Finally, he addresses the practical implications for “carbon neutral” LNG, and suggests a redefinition that focuses on the accurate measurement and reporting of GHG emissions before any offsetting mechanisms are considered.
