John L. Enos

John Enos is Emeritus Fellow in Economics of Magdalen College. He joined the Institute in 1994 to carry out a study of improvements to oil refinery processing units in the last half-century. He completed his research on the fluid catalytic cracking process, now published as Technical Progress and Profits: Process Improvements in Petroleum Refining. His current research focuses on the diffusion of innovations to large state-owned oil companies.

At the time of the innovation, it was no more profitable to operate than existing processes; it is only in the fifty years between then and now that its great potential has been realized. Realization has come through a stream of improvements, not one of which has equalled the genius of the concept of the fluidized bed, but all of which have required acute awareness and substantial effort.
