John Mitchell

Senior Research Advisor

John Mitchell is an Associate Research fellow of at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) and Research Adviser at the Oxford Institute of Energy Studies. From 1994 to 2001 he was Chairman of the Energy and Environment Programme (now called the Sustainable Development Programme) at Chatham House, where he is currently contributing to a project led by Dr Valerie Marcel on “National Oil Companies: challenges for the 21st century.

Mitchell’s publications include: Iraq’s Oil Tomorrow (with Valerie Marcel), RIIA 2003; The Changing Geopolitics of Energy, RIIA 2003; Renewing Energy Security, RIIA 2002; The New Economy of Oil, (with Koji Morita, Norman Selley and Jonathan Stern) RIIA/Earthscan, London, 2001; Companies in a World of Conflict (editor) RIIA, London, 1998; The New Geopolitics of Energy (with Peter Beck and Michael Grubb), RIIA, London, 1996.

Mitchell retired in 1993 from British Petroleum where his posts included Special Adviser to the Managing Directors, Regional Co-ordinator for BP’s subsidiaries in the Western Hemisphere, non-executive director of various BP subsidiaries, and head of BP’s Policy Review Unit.

Before joining BP in 1966 he worked in the Ministry of Trade and Industry, first of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, and then of Southern Rhodesia. He was born and educated in South Africa. He left South Africa in 1956, after graduating from the University of Natal.
