Senior Vice President, Power and Environmental Policies, Alstom Power Systems since 2007.
Before that, career civil servant advising Ministers at the most senior levels, including as Principal Private Secretary to the Deputy Prime Minister and two Home Secretaries. From 2002, Director General, Energy, then Director General, International Energy Security, UK Department of Trade and Industry, until February 2007. Led the preparation of the Government's 2003 Energy White Paper, which for the first time set out a strategic vision for energy policy covering security of supply, competitiveness, affordability and climate change. Led the energy work at the heart of the Programme of Action agreed by the Gleneagles G8 Summit, and on the energy agenda during UK's 2005 Presidency of the EU. Elected as Chair of the International Energy Agency Governing Board (2004 to 2006). Appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath by HM The Queen, June 2005. Honorary Fellow, Energy Institute, 2006, and Member of the Council of the Energy Institute, 2008. Senior Research Fellow, Oxford Institute for Energy Studies from 2006. Member, Board of Governors, Argonne Laboratory, University of Chicago, from 2007. Non-Executive Director, Quintain Estates and Development plc since 2004.
Research interests include oil and gas markets, international energy security and the interaction between markets and policies to address climate change.
