He is an Emeritus Fellow of St. Antony's College, Oxford and a Fellow of St. Catherine's College, Oxford.

In 1966 he obtained an MSc in economics from the University of London. He went on to study the economic development of the Middle Eastern Countries. In 1969 he moved to Oxford to take up a position at Oxford University as Senior Research Officer in the Economics of the Middle East. His interest in oil began to develop in 1972/73 and in 1976 together with the Right Honourable Aubrey Jones, PC he founded the Oxford Energy Policy Club which still meets twice yearly. Two years later he founded the Oxford Energy Seminar which is held every September at St. Catherine's College, Oxford. His next step was to set up the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies in 1982. He was Director of the Institute from then until his retirement in 2003. His position was formalised as Honorary President of the Institute in November 2006.
